Diaz, Benitez lead FC Dallas past Whitecaps
Mauro Diaz and Jair Benitez scored in the final five minutes to lift FC Dallas to a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.
Je-Vaughn Watson also scored for FC Dallas (10-7-10), which moved three points ahead of Vancouver for sixth place in the Western Conference.
Diaz got the tiebreaking goal in the 87th minute when he tapped a pass from Fabian Castillo into the center of the net from inside 10 yards. Benitez added another goal with a looping volley from close to midfield that sailed over the head of Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted in the 90th.
Daigo Kobayashi gave Vancouver (10-10-7) the lead in the 4th minute. Kenny Miller set up the goal when he crossed a right-footed volley to a streaking Kobayashi, who tapped the ball into the net from inside of the goalie's box. It was the first goal that the Whitecaps scored on the road against Dallas, snapping a streak of 274 scoreless minutes.
Watson tied it in the 8th with a volley from 25 yards. He fired a right-footed shot that went over the head of Ousted and underneath the crossbar.
Watson nearly added another goal in the 25th on a breakaway but his shot from inside 12 yards away drifted wide of the far post.
FC Dallas played with leading goal-scorer Blas Perez and starting goalkeeper Raul Fernandez, who both missed the game due to international duty.
