Dallas rides Chavez goal past Chivas USA

Marvin Chavez scored in the 26th minute to lead FC Dallas to a 1-0 win over Chivas USA on Sunday night.

Ruben Luna directed a pass to Chavez from the baseline and Chavez fired a right-footed shot from 8 yards away that bounced off Chivas defender Heath Pearce's leg and into the center of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Dallas (12-5-6) got its third straight shutout at home.

Chivas (6-8-8) did not even have a shot until the 33rd minute when Blair Gavin pulled an attempt wide right. For the game FC Dallas outshot Chivas 16-6.

Dallas goalie Kevin Hartman finished with two saves including one in the 90th minute after Nick LaBrocca drilled a shot from 20 yards away straight at him. Hartman set the club record for shutouts in a season with 12, breaking Matt Jordan's mark set in 1999.

Chavez had a goal disallowed in the 59th minute when he was ruled offside.

Dallas' Ricardo Villar almost scored in the 76th when he curled a shot from 15 yards away forcing Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to make a diving save to his right side. Kennedy finished with three saves.

The temperature at kickoff was 102 degrees-so hot that the teams took a brief water break in the 35th minute.
