Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute and the Columbus Crew went to beat Real Salt Lake 1-0 on Saturday night in a matchup of the past two MLS champions.

Salt Lake upset the Crew in the playoffs last year en route to its first MLS Cup, but went 34 minutes without a shot at one point and didn't mount an attack until William Hesmer was forced to stop Nelson Gonzalez in the 84th minute. That was followed by a kick save on Robbie Findley's breakaway 4 minutes later.

Schelotto got his third goal after Real Salt Lake defender Robbie Russell knocked down Robbie Rogers on the left side of the box.

Columbus improved to 2-0-1, and Salt Lake dropped to 1-3-1.
