Chivas USA 1-1 Vancouver Whitecaps

Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser had some high praise for Tommy Soehn and the Vancouver Whitecaps after their first game under the new coach.

''They were extremely organized and their patience in pressuring was good and they made it difficult for us to break them down,'' Fraser said following Chivas USA's 1-1 tie with the Whitecaps on Wednesday night. ''And I don't think we did a good enough job of probing and find ways behind them.''

Chivas USA (3-4-5) opened the scoring just a minute into the second half when Nick LaBrocca made a darting run from midfield and blasted a 25-yarder. The Whitecaps (1-5-7) countered in the 48th minute on Brazilian winger Camilo's curling shot.

''Obviously, the start of the second half was disappointing, for them to get one, but I thought we responded well. Once you're down, we were in survival mode,'' Soehn said. ''From that standpoint, it was a really courageous effort from some of the guy to hang on for a point.''

Soehn took over the MLS expansion team Monday after Teitur Thordarson was fired. Vancouver (1-5-7) hasn't won an MLS game since opening the season with a 4-2 victory over Toronto FC.

The Whitecaps played the final 23 minutes a man short after forward Eric Hassli picked up his third ejection of the season on a reckless tackle on Ben Zemanski.

''You need to use these types of regime changes as a lift, I suppose,'' Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit said. ''You can't look at the past because it's called the past for a reason. What's in front of us is what's important and now we need to rally around our new manager.''

Chivas USA had two good scoring chances with 10 minutes left, but goalkeeper Joe Cannon and the Vancouver defenders preserved the tie.
