Toronto FC defender Danny Califf is retiring as a player and will become a scout for the team.

The 33-year-old Californian joined Toronto in December after playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy, San Jose, Philadelphia and Chivas USA in Major League Soccer, and Aalborg and Midtjylland in Denmark.

Toronto announced his retirement Friday.

Califf played in the 2000 Olympics and made 23 appearances for the U.S. national team from 2002-09, scoring his only goal in an exhibition against Haiti in 2004. He was on the roster for the 2002 and 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cups, the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2007 Copa America.
