Yankees place Ackley on 15-day DL with torn right labrum
TORONTO (AP) New York Yankees infielder Dustin Ackley has a torn labrum in his right shoulder and may need surgery, manager Joe Girardi said Monday.
New York placed Ackley on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Rob Refsnyder from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
Ackley, who is batting .148 with no homers and four RBIs, left Sunday's win at Tampa Bay after he dove back into first base on a pickoff play. His injury was originally described as a dislocated shoulder.
Before the Yankees played the Blue Jays on Monday night, Girardi said Ackley will see Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Tuesday.
''Surgery is a possibility,'' Girardi said. ''My thought is it will not be a quick deal.''
Ackley is the second Yankees first baseman to have a torn labrum this year. Greg Bird had surgery for the injury in February and is expected to miss the season.
Refnsyder has played in one game for the Yankees this season, hitting a two-run double in a 5-1 victory at Oakland on May 21. He hit .294 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 35 games at Triple-A.
Also Monday, the Yankees reinstated right-hander Luis Severino from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A. Out since May 13 with a strained right triceps, Severino is 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA in seven starts.
''He's healthy and we want to get him starting every fifth day and try to get him back on track,'' Girardi said. ''It's been a struggle for him this year.''
Alex Rodriguez is not in the lineup for Monday's game at Toronto. Carlos Beltran is the DH and Aaron Hicks is in right field.
