New York Yankees designated hitter Nick Johnson has had a setback in his recovery from right wrist surgery.

Manager Joe Girardi says before Thursday's game in Seattle that Johnson felt pain in the wrist taking swings in the initial stages of his recovery and has been sent back to New York for additional evaluation.

Johnson was placed on the disabled list in early May. He was later transferred to the 60-day DL after having surgery. The injury is in the same wrist that was operated on in June 2008 and ended his season. He was also forced to miss all of 2000 with a strain in the wrist.

Johnson is on the disabled list for the 10th time since 2000.
