Yankees' Dominican rookie league squad scores 38 runs - 38!
This was an offensive outburst that would impress even the Bronx Bombers.
All 11 DSL Yankees batters had at least two hits and the team used 31 hits, including five home runs and a season-high nine doubles, to put up the scoreboard smashing totals — despite leaving 26 runners on base. They scored in every inning except the first.
Oh, and get this: There was even a save in the 36-run victory.
Brayan Jimenez was 4 for 7 with seven RBIs, and Mauro Bonifacio had five RBIs while going 4 for 6 with a homer, two doubles, a single and five runs scored. Anthony Valenzuela also homered and drove in five runs, while Asdrubal Alvarez had a homer and four RBIs. Maikol Escotto, who scored a game-high six runs, and Sergio Vargas also hit homers.
Luis Velasquez earned the save after pitching the final four innings and allowing three hits while striking out seven in relief of starter Josue Panacual (1-0).
The DSL Yankees led 3-0 after two innings, but broke it open in the third with nine runs. They led 18-2 after four innings, and kept going from there while taking advantage of the DSL Twins' six errors.
Wilker Reyes (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs — five earned — and four hits in two innings. Carlos Gutierrez, the second of the DSL Twins' seven pitchers, gave up 11 runs — 10 earned — and 11 hits in 1 1/3 innings.
