Willingham out sick for Twins

Published May. 7, 2012 8:32 p.m. ET

Minnesota Twins slugger Josh Willingham was scratched from the lineup on Monday night because of an illness.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said Willingham likely would be available later in the game if needed to pinch hit, but he wanted to give his outfielder a chance to recover. Willingham leads the Twins with five home runs.

Second baseman Alexi Casilla also missed the game with a sore shoulder. Jamey Carroll started for Casilla after being bumped from the starting shortstop job by Brian Dozier, who was called up from Triple-A to make his big league debut against the Los Angeles Angels.

Scott Diamond also joined the Twins on Monday after being called up to replace struggling starter Liam Hendriks. The lefty will start on Tuesday against Dan Haren.
