White Sox designate Jimmy Rollins for assignment, call up top prospect

The Chicago White Sox have followed a surprising 23-10 start with a 7-20 stretch that is leading to changes, and one of those changes Friday was designating three-time All-Star and 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins for assignment.

In discarding one of the best shortstops of the last 15 years, the White Sox are hoping to make room for a future franchise cornerstone at the position, top prospect Tim Anderson. He was hitting .304 with four home runs, 20 RBIs and 11 stolen bases at Class AAA Charlotte.

Chicago signed Rollins, 37, to a minor-league deal in February, and he ended up getting plenty of playing time in the hope he could bridge the gap to Anderson getting called up in 2017. But Rollins was batting only .221 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 149-at bats, and the White Sox are looking for a jolt to save their season.

Rollins was one of the stalwarts on a perennially strong Phillies team from 2000-14 before getting traded to the Dodgers in 2015 and then catching on with the White Sox this year. He won a World Series with Philadelphia in 2008.

On Thursday, the White Sox designated veteran pitcher Mat Latos for assignment and signed former AL MVP Justin Morneau to a minor league deal. Earlier this week, Chicago traded for San Diego Padres pitcher James Shields.
