White Sox 4, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS -- Jose Quintana pitched six innings of one-run ball to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Monday in the Twins' home opener.
Quintana walked three and struck out five in earning his first win of the season. He had allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Oakland A's on April 5.
Melky Cabrera, Brett Lawrie and Todd Frazier each had a pair of hits and Austin Jackson drove in a pair of runs to pace the White Sox on offensive.
Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson took the loss, allowing three runs, only one of them earned, in 5 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.
White Sox closer David Robertson retired the Twins in order in the ninth for his third save.
Minnesota extended its franchise record losing streak to start a season to seven games and already trail the White Sox (5-2) by five games in the American League Central standings.
Lawrie's dribbler up the middle through a drawn-in infield scored Frazier to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Chicago expanded that lead two innings later, taking advantage of an error and a walk to plate two runs. The damage could have been worse; with the bases loaded, Jackson crushed a changeup that missed the left-field foul pole by inches.
On the next pitch, Jackson smacked a two-seamer into center to score two for a 3-0 lead.
The Twins got a run back in the bottom of the inning, getting a walk from Miguel Sano and a double from Trevor Plouffe to put a pair of runners in scoring position with nobody out.
After a foul pop out by Byung Ho Park, Eddie Rosario grounded out to second, scoring Sano, for Minnesota's only run.
Frazier's run-scoring double in the eighth inning made the score 4-1.
White Sox right-hander Matt Albers pitched an inning of shutout relief, extending his scoreless streak to 26 1/3 innings, the longest active streak in the majors.
