Weaver: Angels 'in a tough spot' but there's still time

Getting swept over the weekend in Cleveland was definitely not what the Los Angeles Angels had in mind earlier in the week.

And yet, after a mostly listless weekend filled with sun-aided defensive miscues and ineffective pitching performances the Halos open play Monday having fallen back to the .500 mark at 65-65. They're six-and-a-half games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West and three-and-a-half games off the pace of the Texas Rangers, the second Wild Card team.

Things are rough right now for Mike Scioscia's club, though they're obviously not 'out of it' yet, especially with a month left on the regular season.

Scioscia stressed the importance of keeping a level head when discussing the state of the Angels with Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register: "You certainly don’t want guys to start to press, but you don’t want to just take things in stride," he said.

Veteran Jered Weaver, who started Sunday's game and allowed eight earned runs while again demonstrating a vastly diminished velocity with his fastball, summarized the Angels' recent troubles as follows when speaking with Fletcher: “We’re in a tough spot. Obviously we haven’t been playing the baseball we want to play. We have been struggling a little bit in all aspects. It’s frustrating but at the same time we have to know that things can still happen. We’ve still got to go out there and keep battling.”

Things definitely CAN still happen for the team, they'd just better hurry up and get going if they want to remain in the thick of things as far as the postseason picture is concerned.
