Visa issue affecting Yankees trade

Published Jan. 19, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

There has been a delay in finalizing last week’s blockbuster trade between the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners because Jesus Montero has had difficulty leaving his native Venezuela to undergo the required physical exam, a major-league source told FOXSports.com.

Montero, 22, has been waiting for a passport or visa issue to be resolved, the source said. And now Seattle — where Montero’s physical will take place — is dealing with the aftermath of an ice storm that has prompted Washington Governor Christine Gregoire to declare a state of emergency. So even if Montero had clearance to travel, it would be difficult for him to do so.

It’s not clear when the formal announcement will be made. Montero was dealt with right-hander Hector Noesi to the Mariners for right-handers Michael Pineda and Jose Campos.
