Twins designate RHP Boof Bonser for assignment
The Minnesota Twins have designated right-hander Boof Bonser for assignment to make room on the roster for starting pitcher Carl Pavano.
A free agent, Pavano accepted Minnesota's offer of salary arbitration Monday night, keeping him with the Twins for next season. The right-hander went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in 12 starts for the AL Central champions after coming over in an August trade from Cleveland.
Bonser had surgery on his pitching shoulder in spring training and missed last season. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment Tuesday, meaning Minnesota has 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors.
Bonser went 3-7 with a 5.93 ERA in 2008 when he started the season in the rotation before being demoted to the bullpen. He is 18-25 with a 5.12 ERA in 163 career appearances for the Twins.
