Traffic delays umps for ChiSox-Nats

Published Apr. 10, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Because the umpiring crew was stuck in traffic, the start of the Chicago White Sox game at the Washington Nationals was delayed 16 minutes Wednesday night.

The Nationals said the umpires' preparation for the game was delayed by their late arrival at the ballpark.

The umpiring crew of Tom Hallion, Chris Guccione, Ron Kulpa and Phil Cuzzi were not available for comment after the game, which started at 7:21 p.m. ET instead of the original 7:05 p.m. scheduled time.

Washington manager Davey Johnson said the Nationals were together for a luncheon and were warned that traffic could be a problem because of an immigration rally at the Capitol.

"I'm sure the umpires were not aware of it and got caught up in it," Johnson told MLB.com. "The bus driver [at the Nationals luncheon] could not go near the rally. We just went all around just getting out of there."
