Torre: MLB may consider alcohol ban

Major League Baseball executive vice president of baseball operations Joe Torre said Sunday the recent revelation that Boston Red Sox players drank beer in the clubhouse during games could lead to a total alcohol ban.

Red Sox pitchers Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz confessed they drank during games this season, while Josh Beckett and John Lackey were also involved in the controversy, according to Boston Globe sources.

Torre described the situation at Boston as a "concern" and said the league would investigate.

"I know I have plans just to talk to some people," Torre said, without clarifying what the investigation would entail.

"It's something we're going to look at and find the best way to approach it, let's put it that way," he added.

The Red Sox are one of 12 teams that allow alcohol in the clubhouse, and Torre said a blanket ban was worth considering.

"If we do happen to bar alcohol from the clubhouses, you have to understand the intent of this thing and what it looks like," Torre said. "We're up there and we're role models, or we should be role models for the youngsters and how they behave.

"It's something where we implement rules that we feel would be best for the game and who we're being watched by. We've got to look at it."
