Tejada invited to work out for Orioles in Florida

Miguel Tejada was invited to work out for the Baltimore Orioles at their extended spring training camp in Florida.

Tejada will go to Sarasota, Fla., and take a physical for the team in addition to his workout. Orioles spokeswoman Monica Barlow said Friday night the sides have not agreed to a contract.

The veteran infielder, however, is expecting more than a tryout. He told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday from his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that he will go to Orioles camp Monday and after a few days he will report to the major league team.

Tejada played for Baltimore from 2004-07 and again in 2010. He was the 2002 AL MVP with Oakland.

''I'm very happy to have reached this agreement. I feel like a child, the same as I felt when I signed my first professional contract with the Oakland Athletics out of the Dominican Republic,'' Tejada said.

The 37-year-old Tejada played 91 games last season with the San Francisco Giants before being released in August. He hit .239 with four homers and 26 RBIs.

''I'll take every at-bat as if it was my last and I'm going to enjoy it the best I can,'' he said Friday.

Baltimore signed Tejada to a $72 million, six-year contract before the 2004 season. He was traded to Houston in December 2007, then rejoined the Orioles before the 2010 season. They traded him to San Diego that July.

Tejada has a career batting average of .285 with 304 homers and 1,282 RBIs with Oakland, Baltimore, Houston, San Diego and San Francisco. He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of misleading congressional investigators who questioned him about steroids.
