Teixeira injures Wilson in home plate collision
Los Angeles Angels backup catcher Bobby Wilson sustained a concussion and injured his left ankle in a violent collision at home plate with New York's Mark Teixeira in the third inning of Friday night's game against the Yankees.
Teixeira was hit in the back by Ervin Santana as he turned to avoid a fastball in the top of the third. He was on second base when Robinson Cano lined a single to right field. He never broke stride rounding third and bowled over Wilson with his left shoulder, just as the rookie was struck in the mask by outfielder Bobby Abreu's two-hop throw.
Wilson, making his first big league start behind the plate, remained on the ground for several moments while trainer Ned Bergert and manager Mike Scioscia rushed to his aid. He was limped off the field with assistance, but had to be lifted into the dugout by Bergert before he was taken to the clubhouse and replaced by Mike Napoli.
Wilson, 27, was taken to a hospital for X-Rays and a CT scan.
The Angels placed catcher Jeff Mathis on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday because of a fractured right wrist. Their emergency catcher is reserve infielder Robb Quinlan, who returned from the minors to replace Mathis on the 25-man roster.
