Strieby, Wells help Tigers top Fla Southern 13-1

There was a time when two hits by a player named Kaline wouldn't have been so unusual in a Detroit Tigers game.

This time the hits came against the Tigers in Tuesday's 13-1 exhibition victory over Florida Southern.

Colin Kaline, a switch-hitting junior third baseman and the grandson of Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline, made an impression with two singles and a walk.

``He looked good,'' Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

Rookies Ryan Strieby and Casper Wells each homered and drove in three runs for the Tigers. Two-run doubles by Carlos Guillen and Eric Roof were among Detroit's 16 hits. Don Kelly went 2 for 2 with a sacrifice fly.

Johnny Damon played for Detroit for the first time. The Tigers' new left fielder went 0 for 1.

Rookie right fielder Brennan Boesch left the game in the fifth inning with a cut above his eye after getting hit by a fly ball in a swirling wind. He took some stitches, but isn't likely to miss any time.

``Everybody should be happy today,'' Leyland said. ``Boesch might be the only one that's not too happy, him and my new outfield coach (Tom Brookens) - it took him one game to get a guy over to Watson Clinic.''

Phil Coke, Eddie Bonine and Enrique Gonzalez each pitched two innings for the Tigers. Joel Zumaya gave up a hit and walk and hit a batter in the seventh, but got out of it with two strikeouts.

Wade Kirkland, a junior shortstop, had three hits, including a double off the top of the center field wall against Coke.

``I was comfortable with where I was at, but I'm happy to be here and I can't imagine being anywhere else,'' said Coke, who is not likely to start another game for Detroit. ``I'm excited for the season, I'm excited about being able to play with these guys,'' he said.

NOTES: Tigers 2B Scott Sizemore was held out because of the weather conditions, but is expected to play Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin. ... LHP Bobby Seay, who had been bothered by a sore shoulder, threw Tuesday without problems. ... Kelly, outfielders Ryan Raburn and Clete Thomas and pitchers Alfredo Figaro, Armando Galarraga, Ryan Perry, Fu-Te Ni and Daniel Schlereth agreed to contract terms Tuesday, leaving the Tigers with no unsigned players on their 40-man roster.
