Strasburg says elbow feels great

Washington Nationals fireballer Stephen Strasburg said he hopes to begin throwing off a mound within a few weeks, MLB.com reported Thursday.

Strasburg, whose electrifying rookie season was cut short for Tommy John elbow surgery, said Wednesday night that he is in the best shape of his life.

"[The elbow] is doing great," Strasburg said in an interview with CBS during a college basketball game between San Diego State and UNLV.

"I'm well into the rehab process. I have another three or four weeks before I start throwing. Once you start throwing, it's going to be a long process just getting your strength back. I feel great about it. I have a really good feeling I'm going to come back 100 percent."

The Nationals hope the 22-year-old San Diego State product can pitch in a game by the end of next season.

Strasburg struck out 14 Pirates in his highly anticipated debut on June. 8, one year after he was drafted with the top pick by the Nationals.

He went on to a 5-3 record, with a 2.91 ERA in 12 starts, striking out 92 batters over 68 innings. His last start came on Aug. 21 against the Phillies when he felt pain in his elbow, and he underwent surgery the following month.
