Stanton's power surges haven't been enough to keep Marlins afloat

Published May. 20, 2015 9:08 p.m. ET

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton is doing all he can at the plate for his team, but his efforts haven't been enough to yank the Marlins out of the depths of a disappointing start to the 2015 season.

As of Wednesday, Stanton is tied with Bryce Harper for the most runs batted in (38) in MLB.

However, that figure accounts for over one-fourth of the Marlins' RBIs, as Miami ranks 24th in the majors in the stat with 142 RBIs in 40 games, which amounts to 3.6 RBIs per game.

So far in 2015, Stanton has not only been a crucial contributor to the Marlins' offense, he has been the Marlins' offense.

The right fielder has knocked 12 home runs this season, yet the Marlins rank 28th in MLB in homers with 26.

An even more alarming note that demonstrates just how anemic Miami's offense has been is that Stanton leads the league in home runs in a loss with nine, according to ESPN.

That phenomenon was on full display in the Marlins' 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, in which Stanton accounted for the Marlins' only runs with a two-run blast in the sixth inning.

The Marlins only put one runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game.

Heading into their game Wednesday against the D-backs, the Marlins are in last place in the NL East, sitting at 16-24, with identical 8-12 home and away records.
