Stanton injury a huge blow to Marlins' playoff hopes

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:06 p.m. ET

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton will miss the remainder of the season with a left groin injury, manager Don Mattingly told reporters on Sunday.

The news came hours after the team placed Stanton on the disabled list with an injury he suffered on the final play of Saturday's 8-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Stanton slid awkwardly into second while trying to stretch a single into a double, but was tagged out to end the game.

The injury is a huge blow to the Marlins, who are fighting to make the postseason as a NL wild-card team. Heading into Sunday's games, the Marlins were tied with the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot.
