Sources: Red Sox, Ross reach agreement
The Red Sox, adding depth to their outfield, have reached agreement with free agent Cody Ross. The deal is for one year and $3 million, according to major league sources.
Ross told The Associated Press in a text message late Monday that the deal won't be finalized until he takes a physical. He expressed his thanks on Twitter to San Francisco fans and wrote: ''Looking fwd to meeting the (hash)redsoxnation fans!!''
Ross, 31, will give the Sox a right-handed alternative in right field and also provide insurance in left if Carl Crawford fails to recover from wrist surgery by Opening Day.
Ryan Kalish and Ryan Sweeney, both left-handed hitters, are among the Red Sox's other candidates in right, along with Darnell McDonald, a right-handed hitter.
Ross, the MVP of the 2010 National League Championship Series, batted .240/.325/.405 for the Giants last season, with 14 home runs and 52 RBI.
He is a career .282/.349/.563 hitter against left-handed pitching.
