Sources: Pedro to sign with Phillies on Wednesday
Pedro Martinez has passed a physical and will sign with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, major-league sources confirmed to FOXSports.com senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal.
The deal is $1 million for one year, with the three-time Cy Young winner making another $1.5 million based on incentives.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who guided the NL during a 4-3 loss in the All-Star Game, said he'd heard Phillies officials had watched Martinez throw.
"They said he was throwing much better than he was last year and that he was in tremendous shape," Manuel said after the game. "Then I also hear today that he took a physical. That's about the extent of what I've heard."
Martinez, 38, hasn't pitched this season and his last bit of comparable major-league work came in the World Baseball Classic in March.
Martinez threw 109 innings with a 5.61 ERA and 5-6 record for the Mets last season. A year prior, he managed only 28 innings because of injury.
The agreement was originally reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Yahoo.
