Source: Yanks, Diaz agree to terms

The New York Yankees, needing a right-handed hitting outfielder, identified one potential solution Wednesday but are still looking for others.

The team agreed to terms with Matt Diaz on a minor league contract, according to a source. Diaz, 34, will receive an invitation to major league spring training.

Last season, in 51 games with the Atlanta Braves, Diaz hit .222 with two home runs and 13 RBI. Diaz went on the disabled list in late July with a bruised right thumb that impacted his ability to grip. He had surgery in August to remove splinters from the thumb; that surgery ended his season.

Diaz is a career .291 hitter in 726 career games with the Rays, Royals, Pirates and Braves.

It is doubtful that the Yankees will conclude their search with the addition of a player on a minor league deal.

They have talked to free agent Scott Hairston, discussed a trade for Vernon Wells with the Los Angeles Angels and considered other options as well.
