The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a two-year, $14 million contract with closer Jose Valverde, one major league source confirmed to FOXSports.com.

The deal includes an option for a third year, worth $9 million. Because Valverde is a Type A free agent, the Tigers will need to surrender their first-round pick to the Astros in order to sign him.

Valverde led the National League in saves in 2007 and 2008; he recorded 25 for the Astros last year, while going 4-2 with a 2.33 ERA in 52 outings.

Yahoo! Sports was first to report the agreement.
