"Slice, Slice Baby" becomes web gold

When Marty McCurry made a parody music video called “Slice, Slice Baby,” for the members at his golf club, he never intended for it to become a viral hit.

McCurry said the video started as a project for his club’s annual banquet, at which McCurry honors the course’s major winners with a video tribute. McCurry said he did a spoof video each of the last few years as part of the event, and this year, after talking with the Tates (whose mother owns a dance studio) they settled on a song and dance.

The performance was a hit at the banquet, and before long, friends convinced McCurry to put it on YouTube, where it now has nearly 17,000 views.

“I didn’t have any professional software or anything,” McCurry told FOXSports.com. “I kind of did it myself, so we didn’t think it was that great. But one thing led to another, and the guys said to put it online. It got some decent interest, but I never really pushed it at all.”

One person who was on board from the start, however, was Rays pitcher and 2012 AL Cy Young winner David Price, who tweeted a link to the YouTube in late January, before pitchers and catchers reported to spring training.

Of course, there also may have been some history behind the shout-out. Price, who starred at Vanderbilt before being drafted by the Rays, is originally from Murfreesboro and has known McCurry since he was a kid. Price holds his annual charity golf tournament at McCurry’s club and plays golf with McCurry in the offseason.

And if you’re wondering, Price has a pretty decent swing.

“He’s good, and if he played a lot of golf, he would be a really good player, actually, but he obviously doesn’t have that much time to play,” McCurry said. “But he’s pretty talented. He’s one of those guys that with baseball, basketball football, golf, it doesn’t matter, he’s going to be pretty good at it.”

As for McCurry, he’s not sure what next year’s spoof will be, but he’s got quite the reputation to live up to now. Fortunately, he embraces the challenge.

“To be honest, I’ve been doing that type stuff since I was a kid,” McCurry said. “I wrote (“Slice, Slice Baby”) in probably 35 minutes total. I had to get in a certain mood, but once I got going, I basically wrote the entire song. I’ve got a buddy who’s got some nice equipment. He let me come in and record it, so it made the sound, at least, sound pretty good.”
