Should the Phillies call up Aaron Nola?

Published May. 13, 2015 12:04 a.m. ET

As expected, this season for the Philadelphia Phillies is pretty much a wrap. Seeing that they are in a rebuilding process, wouldn’t it make sense to give 2014 first-round draft pick Aaron Nola some experience at the big-league level?

Nola is not a kid who was pitching in high school last year. He pitched for three seasons at LSU, and when he was drafted, it was thought that he would be on the fast track for the Major Leagues. On top of that he has a 2.04 ERA at Double-A Reading.

The simple answer to the question is no, the Phillies should not bring him up. Patience is the key, as they saw first hand on Monday night when they faced the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Gerrit Cole. The Pirates were in a similar situation, with a hot-shot prospect lighting it up in the minors right after a college career. But the Pirates waited, and now it’s paying off.

The Pirates allowed Cole to mature, and by waiting, they have him under club control through the 2020 season, instead of the 2019 season. It will also save them about $4 million next year.

The Phillies do not have much to gain by moving Nola up, but they do have a lot to lose.
