The Tigers have agreed to a $2.5 million, two-year contract with infielder Ramon Santiago that avoided arbitration.
Santiago had seven homers and 35 RBIs - both career highs - and hit .267 in 93 games last season for the Tigers.
Santiago, who gets $1.25 million annually under Wednesday's agreement, will back up shortstop Adam Everett. But he might get a chance to be Detroit's regular second baseman if Scott Sizemore has trouble recovering from surgery on his left ankle or adjusting to the major leagues.
Sizemore, the Tigers' 2009 minor league player of the year, is expected to replace Placido Polanco, who signed with Philadelphia as a free agent.
