Royals agree to one-year deal with OF Ankiel
The Royals have agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with
outfielder Rick Ankiel, one major league source confirmed to
FOXSports.com.
The deal also includes a $6 million mutual option for 2011,
sources said. Ankiel could also earn up to $500,000 in performance
bonuses this year.
Kansas City has been seeking outfield help throughout the
winter and should have a good defensive group, with David DeJesus,
Scott Podsednik and Ankiel. Jose Guillen could figure into the
rotation, as well, unless the Royals decide that he’s a
better fit at designated hitter.
Ankiel is coming off a down year with the Cardinals. He
batted .231 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs in 122 games. He played
all three outfield positions but spent the majority of his time in
center.
