Rockies get Contreras for rotation help

Chicago has included cash in the deal, to defray "the majority" of Contreras' salary for the rest of this season, according to one major league source. He's scheduled to earn roughly $1.67 million over the final month.

Contreras is 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA in 21 starts this year. He struggled recently, with a 1-6 record and 6.97 ERA after the All-Star break.

Contreras wasn't the Rockies' first choice. They pursued Jon Garland before Arizona traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Hynick was 10-9 with a 3.83 ERA this season at Class AAA Colorado Springs. The 24-year-old was an eighth-round pick in 2006.

The White Sox also traded designated hitter Jim Thome to the Dodgers on Monday for minor-league infielder Justin Fuller.
