Rockies DFA Drew Stubbs, call up Matt McBride

As Drew Stubbs' struggles in 2015 continue, the Colorado Rockies made a move on Wednesday to replace him on the roster.

Stubbs, who is hitting .216/.286/.431 with five home runs and 10 RBI in 51 games this season, was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, Colorado called up utility man Matt McBride, who made his major-league debut with the club in Aug. 2012.

McBride, who is 30 years old like Stubbs, knows that his current opportunity with the Rockies could determine the future of his career playing baseball.

"You'd be lying if you said that stuff never pops into your head; things will," McBride said. "But you've really got to try to not get too caught up with it. You're aware of the opportunity. It's not like you completely tune it out. But by focusing on each day, your routine, that may help alleviate any pressure you're going to put on yourself when you go out there."

Manager Walt Weiss commended Stubbs for maintaining his professionalism during a rough season. He said Rockies' primary goal in making the roster moves is to see what McBride has to offer.

"We wanted to get a look at Matt McBride, needing a roster spot," Weiss said. "And those kind of things come into play, but at the same time, it's early enough that it gives Drew maybe an opportunity elsewhere before the end of the season."
