Rockies decline $4.5M option on RHP Dotel

The Colorado Rockies have declined their $4.5 million option on Octavio Dotel, opting to give the right-handed reliever a $250,000 buyout.

Dotel began last season as the Pittsburgh Pirates' closer before being dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 31 for pitcher James McDonald.

When the Dodgers fell out of contention, they traded him to Colorado in mid-September. The Rockies were Dotel's 10th team in 12 major league seasons.

Because he was traded, Dotel had the right to reject the option if it had been exercised.

Dotel, who will be 37 in three weeks, was 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in eight appearances for the Rockies. Overall last season, he was 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 68 contests.

In 12 major league seasons, he's 49-43 with a 3.75 ERA and 105 career saves.

He made $3.25 million last season.
