Rockies closer Ottavino has unusually flexible elbow

Published Apr. 26, 2015 5:46 p.m. ET

Adam Ottavino has settled in nicely into his new role as Rockies closer. While part of his success is undoubtedly his blazing fastball, which can reach 98 mph, there’s something else which might be contributing to his success. He told MLB.com:

"Naturally in both my elbows, I have like five or six degrees of hyper-extension," said Ottavino, who then rotated his arms so the eyes of his elbows turned outward. "It's a gift and a curse. It's probably something that helps me stay healthy long term, throw some Gumby-weird pitches…”

According to the reliever, his flexible elbows "actually help me get a little more whip and get up and around certain breaking pitches better than a lot of guys.”

Ottavino hasn’t allowed a run in 10 1/3 innings and is 3-for-3 in save opportunities.
