Reyes, Pagan again out of Mets starting lineup
Jose Reyes was out of the New York Mets' starting lineup Thursday for a second consecutive game because of tightness in his lower back.
Reyes, who was scratched from Wednesday's game in San Juan, Puerto Rico, against the Florida Marlins because of the problem, said he needed another day off and that he would be reevaluated Friday.
The Mets were also without switch-hitting center fielder Angel Pagan, who missed most of the last week with muscle spasms in his right side.
New York manager Jerry Manuel hopes to have both players back in the lineup by Saturday.
Jesus Feliciano replaced Pagan and hit leadoff, while Ruben Tejada moved over from second to take over for Reyes at shortstop. Alex Cora was slated to start at second base.
The back problem prevents Reyes from swinging pain-free from the left side. The switch-hitter has yet to try to hit from the right side, but was preparing to take batting practice from both sides of the plate before Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals.
Pagan was also scheduled to test his sore side in BP before Thursday's game.
Reyes is hitting .277 with six homers, 32 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 73 games. Pagan, replacing the injured Carlos Beltran in center, is batting .304 with four homers, 36 RBIs and 14 steals in 70 games.
