Reports: Cuban RHP Lopez agrees to record deal with Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a record-setting deal with Cuban right-hander Yoan Lopez on Tuesday, according to reports.
MLB.com reports the agreement includes an $8.27 million bonus -- a new high for an international amateur player.
Lopez, 21, has pitched the past three seasons for Isla de la Juventud in Serie Nacional, Cuba's top league. CBS Sports notes that his arsenal features a fastball in the mid-90s. He finished with a 3.12 ERA, 28 strikeouts and 11 walks in 49 innings in his final season before defecting.
According to MLB.com, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds all expressed interest in Lopez.
