Report: Yankees' Cano wants new deal
Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano wants to get his two club contract options deleted and a new contract worked up, his agent Scott Boras told the New York Post.
General manager Brian Cashman, already distracted by efforts to renew lefty ace CC Sabathia's deal, has not responded.
"I called Cash to ask about dropping the options and he hasn't returned the call," Boras said.
The Yankees hold two options -- which cannot be split -- on the 29-year-old for $14 million next season and $15 million for 2013. There are $2 million buyouts for both years.
However, the chances of the Yankees agreeing to restructure Cano's contract are "highly unlikely," a source told FOX Sports Thursday.
Cano made $10 million this past season while cementing his reputation as one of the best hitters in the American League by batting .302 with 28 home runs and 118 RBIs.
Meanwhile, Sabathia can opt out of the final four years and $92 million on his contract three days after the World Series ends and become a free agent. The Yankees will seek to sign the 31-year-old -- who has compiled a 59-23 record in his three years in the Bronx -- to an extension before he hits the open market.
According to the New York Post, the Yankees will offer Sabathia a more lucrative deal for the next five or six years. But if Sabathia is seeking a seventh or eighth year, the Yankees may pause, and other teams may become involved.
