Report: Pedroia to have knee examined

Published Jun. 9, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned to Boston on Thursday to have his right knee examined, and possibly undergo surgery that could sideline him for a month, the Boston Globe reported.

Pedroia said he suffered the injury May 16 against Baltimore when he landed hard on his right knee while fielding a ground ball that had deflected off pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.

"It could keep me out a month," Pedroia told The Globe after Wednesday night's 11-6 victory over the Yankees. "It's not what I want. But I have to get it checked out. It's been bothering me a lot."

He said he will undergo a procedure in which a "needle with a camera on it" is inserted in his knee to gauge the extent of the injury. Pedroia, who would undergo surgery immediately if need be, said it has been "hard to hit" since the injury.

The 27-year-old, three-time All-Star has struggled this season, hitting just .247 with a .338 on-base percentage, well below his career averages of .299/.369.

Pedroia is also feeling the effects of his surgically-repaired left foot, an injury that forced him to miss nearly all of the final three months of last season.

The Red Sox, who now lead the Yankees by a game in the AL East, will look to complete a three-game series sweep Thursday night in New York.
