Report: Hughes to return in 6-8 weeks

Published May. 4, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes is feeling better following a late April cortisone shot, and the team said Wednesday it expects him back in six to eight weeks.

Hughes saw a specialist Monday to rule out a rare condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, which would have required season-ending surgery.

"We're pleased that he doesn't have the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome … but you don't want to lose any pitcher for six to eight weeks," manager Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees now believe the issue may be inflammation in his shoulder.

Regardless, they are optimistic they will have a full-strength Hughes back this season.

The 24-year-old went on the 15-day disabled list April 15 after he struggled through his first three starts with reduced velocity.

Hughes has said he does not feel pain, but it feels like his pitches have nothing on them. He has likened it to the feeling you get in your leg if it gets hit hard and goes numb.
