Report: Hall of Famer, Cards icon Brock has part of leg amputated

Hall of Famer and St. Louis Cardinals legend Lou Brock had part of his left leg amputated recently because of an infection related to a diabetic condition, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Tuesday.

The Cardinals and longtime friend Dick Zitzmann confirmed to Associated Press on Wednesday that Brock, 76, has undergone the procedure. Zitzmann told AP the operation was done Oct. 27 and that Brock is rehabbing at a local hospital and will be fitted for a prosthetic leg. Brock was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 15 years ago. 

Brock enjoyed a 19-year MLB career, including 16 seasons with the Cardinals. The left fielder was a six-time All-Star and led the league in runs scored twice and stolen bases eight times. In 1974, he stole a career-best 118 bases.

With 938 career stolen bases, Brock ranks second all time — he was first until Ricky Henderson passed him in 1991 and finished with 1,406. Brock hit .293 in his career with 3,023 hits, 149 homers and 900 RBI.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985, his first year on the ballot.
