Report: Former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. to become Red Sox 1B coach

File this under "things you didn't expect to hear this offseason."

According to a report from MLB.com, former Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is a leading candidate to join the Boston Red Sox -- though not as a member of their front office.

Instead, Amaro will hold an on-field job as the Sox first base coach.

This is certainly a different career path than what Amaro was on as he has had no previous coaching experience.

As MLB.com notes, he and Red Sox manager John Farrell played together for a brief period of time with the Cleveland Indians.

If the move does go through, Amaro would be the second general manager to assume an on-field role this season. Earlier in the year, Miami Marlins GM Dan Jennings became the interim manager.

Replacing Amaro in Philadelphia is, reportedly, Los Angeles Angels assistant general manager Matt Klentak.
