Report: A-Rod cleared for rehab play

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has been medically cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment on July 1, the New York Daily News reports.

Rodriguez has yet to play this season following surgery on his left hip in January, at which time he was projected to be sidelined until after the All-Star break.

Although A-Rod is on the comeback trail, the injury isn't the only potential roadblock to his return. He is among the players being investigated by Major League Baseball in the Biogenesis steroid scandal and could face a league-imposed suspension when the investigation is complete.

Rodriguez, 37, hit .272/.353/.430 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 122 games last season. After the 2013 season, he will have four years and $86 million remaining on the 10-year, $275 million contract he signed in December of 2007.

The Yankees, hit hard by injuries this season, also are without shortstop Derek Jeter (ankle), first baseman Mark Teixeira, center fielder Curtis Granderson (finger) and third baseman/first baseman Kevin Youkilis (back).
