PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) Right-hander Felipe Paulino has been released by the Boston Red Sox, who agreed to pay a $100,000 retention bonus to catcher Humberto Quintero.

Paulino appeared in four spring training games for the Red Sox, giving up one run in four innings.

Boston had until Tuesday to inform Paulino and Quintero that they will be on the opening-day roster, pay the bonus or release them.

On Monday, the Red Sox obtained catcher Sandy Leon from Washington to replace Christian Vazquez, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a sprained right elbow. With Vazquez out, Ryan Hanigan is the only catcher in the major league camp other than Leon and Quintero.

Leon was in the starting lineup Tuesday against a Tampa Bay split squad.
