Red Sox pitcher Lester scratched from Wednesday start amid trade rumors

Published Jul. 30, 2014 2:46 a.m. ET

Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, who has been the subject of trade rumors in recent days, has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park, according to manager John Farrell.

Right-hander Brandon Workman will be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket and start in Lester's place.

"In light of all the uncertainty surrounding Jon Lester, it's probably in everyone's best interest that he does not make that start," Farrell said after Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Toronto.

Farrell did not announce a corresponding roster move for Workman's recall. Lester also was unavailable for comment after the game.
