Rangers outfielder Craig Gentry was placed on major league baseball's new seven-day concussion disabled list Thursday.

The move came four days after Gentry got hurt. Because that move can't be retroactive, the earliest he can return is Aug. 4.

Texas recalled catcher Taylor Teagarden from Triple-A Round Rock.

Gentry was the only Texas runner to get to second base Sunday night in a 3-0 loss to Toronto. He got hurt on that play.

His helmet came off as he slid headfirst and his neck twisted when he made contact with second baseman Aaron Hill's leg. Gentry was stunned briefly, but stayed in after being checked by a trainer.

''It was more like whiplash. At first, I couldn't see very well,'' Gentry said. ''I tried to tough it out.''

Gentry said he felt OK the next morning before started having headaches and feeling back before the next game that night.

The Rangers then held him out of the lineup before deciding to put him on the concussion DL before the finale of their four-game series against Minnesota.

''We just want to make sure everything was right,'' manager Ron Washington. ''He's too valuable for us.''

Gentry, the speedy right-hander who has primarily split time in center field with left-handed-hitting Endy Chavez, is hitting .265 with seven RBIs in his 39 games since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock. He has started 24 of those games, 22 in center and two in right.

Gentry said he has had at least three other concussions playing baseball. He said he got hit by a pitch and twice got hurt crashing into outfield walls.

''I think it's a mild concussion,'' Gentry said. ''It's tough to say with these things.''

Teagarden is in is fourth stint with Texas. He hit .269 in nine games with the Rangers, and hit .281 with 10 homers and 20 RBIs in 37 games for Round Rock.
