The Chicago Cubs used this past offseason to put a new regime in place and give the team a new identity, and they hope that the days of often being on the losing end of embarrassing gaffes and unfortunate events are behind them.

It seems that they may be onto something, as luck was on their side during Friday afternoon’s game against the Pirates.

The two teams battled it out in an exciting game that went to extra innings, with the score tied at 10-10. The Cubs later loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th inning and were looking to earn a walk-off victory.

Thanks to Gregory Polanco, they would do just that.

Matt Szczur hit a seemingly-harmless, routine fly ball to right field, and Polanco went to get under it. Unfortunately for Pirates fans, he slipped and ended up losing his footing. As he hit the ground, so did the ball, and Szczur ended up with a walk-off bloop single.

The Cubs won the game in thrilling fashion, 11-10. The team has now won five straight.
