Pitcher Johan Santana's shoulder has no structural damage
Johan Santana's comeback apparently has hit a speed bump but not a dead end.
The free-agent lefthander experienced discomfort in his surgically repaired pitching shoulder after a Jan. 14 outing in Venezuela, raising concerns that his career might be in jeopardy.
However, FOX Sports MLB Insider Jon Paul Morosi reported Thursday that an MRI exam revealed there is no structural damage to Santana's shoulder.
"He will be ready for spring training," Santana's agent told Morosi.
Santana, who will turn 36 in March, last pitched in the majors in 2012 with the New York Mets, with whom he threw his and the franchise's only career no-hitter that season. The two-time American League Cy Young Award winner missed last season after tearing his Achilles tendon during a rehab assignment in June.
In his 12-season major-league career, Santana is 139-78 with a 3.20 ERA and 1,988 strikeouts (in 2,025-2/3 innings).
