KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected the contract of Pedro Florimon from Triple-A Indianapolis and inserted him into the lineup at shortstop Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals.

Florimon hit .254 with two home runs, 18 RBIs and 20 runs in 60 games with Indianapolis. Florimon was the Minnesota Twins' starting shortstop in 2013, hitting .221 in 134 games.

The Pirates are likely going to be without starting shortstop Jordy Mercer until September. He was placed on the disabled list Monday with a sprained left knee.

The Pirates optioned right-hander Wilfredo Boscan to Indianapolis. To create a space on the 40-man roster for Florimon, they designated for assignment left-hander Jayson Aquino.
