Pirates P Erik Bedard pulled due to back spasms

Published May. 9, 2012 8:40 p.m. ET

Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard left Wednesday night's game against Washington in the second inning due to back spasms.

Bedard grimaced after his third pitch to Washington's Adam LaRoche in the top of the second. He spent several moments stretching for manager Clint Hurdle before being replaced by Brad Lincoln. Bedard threw just eight pitches in all.

The 32-year-old Bedard is 2-4 with a 2.57 ERA with the Pirates this season, though he has struggled with injuries throughout his career. He missed the entire 2010 season with a shoulder injury and had issues last season with a sprained left knee.
