Pirates' Melancon has turned a corner

After a rough start to the season, Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon has found his rhythm.

"Melancon has made 10 straight scoreless appearances (10 1⁄3 innings) and has been scored on just once in his last 19 outings," as the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review notes.

When Melancon got off to a rough start there were questions about his velocity and many wondered if he should keep his role as the team's closer.

However, amid all the doubts, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle stuck with Melancon and it's now paying off in a big way.

“The outlier was the bad week,” Hurdle said. “Since he's shown up here, he's pitched very effectively in whatever role he's been in. He had a hard week. All he did was keep his mouth shut, go to work and execute pitches. It speaks to his perseverance, resiliency and toughness.”
